What is eisegesis? It is reading into the text. When you come to the text with preconceived notions, man-made agendas, or anecdotal experiences, you read into Scripture. It is easy to do, and sometimes hard to notice you’ve done it. The opposite of eisegesis is exegesis, reading “out of” the text.In this episode of Ask the Theologian, Dr. Randy White discusses three passages of Scripture that are commonly infected by the epidemic of eisegesis.
- Proverbs 29:18 is often misused to promote a pastor’s vision.
- Revelation 21:27 is often misused to teach that there is no hell, or that Purgatory exists.
- John 6:37-39 is often used to prove predestination.
In this episode you will learn some principles of interpretation that will help you avoid eisegesis.[fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=“yes” overflow=“visible”][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=“1_1” background_position=“left top” background_color=“” border_size=“” border_color=“” border_style=“solid” spacing=“yes” background_image=“” background_repeat=“no-repeat” padding=“” margin_top=“0px” margin_bottom=“0px” class=“” id=“” animation_type=“” animation_speed=“0.3” animation_direction=“left” hide_on_mobile=“no” center_content=“no” min_height=“none”][s3bubbleAudioSingle bucket=“AskTheTheologian” track=“Radio+Version%2Fatt-042614.mp3”]
