Careful Correction

“He who corrects a scoffer gets dishonor for himself, And he who reproves a wicked man gets insults for himself. Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you, Reprove a wise man and he will love you.” (Proverbs 9:7–8, NASB95)Why do those who most need correction least receive it? Why are the wise sometimes scoffed at as fools by the foolish?When the heart becomes wise, it ceases to correct every wrong. In some villiages, it shakes the dust off the sandals and moves on. In some towns, it is a “prophet without honor."  Sadly, wise instruction is not always a sought after commodity. And one needn’t be an utter simpleton and fool to reject wisdom. Wisdom is often rejected by those in places of learning, places of ruling, and places of pleasure.The rejection of wisdom is not so much a matter of simple foolishness as a matter of simple laziness. To hear wisdom requires the struggle of confrontation with ideas that are foreign and ways that are different.
